U-M Health Regional Bronze Plan
U-M Health’s Regional Bronze Health Plan is a High-Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) which pairs with a Heath Savings Account (HSA).
Is it right for me?
- Team members who generally have lower utilization of health care services (ex: Annual physicals and maybe one/two visits throughout the year), or those who value paying less in premium by accepting more out-of-pocket health care costs, may be good fits for the Bronze Health Plan.
- Team members with a lot of expensive medications, or who would rather pay more per month to avoid higher out-of-pocket costs, may wish to look at another plan.

- Coverage requirements:
- Enrolled members pay out-of-pocket for all medical services received until they meet their annual deductible, including prescriptions, except for preventive services (ex: Annual physical exam, well child visits, etc.)
- Deductibles must be met in full before the plan pays – HDHPs have non-embedded deductibles
- Enrollment requirements:
- Team members with J-1 Visas are not eligible for the Bronze Health Plan, due to Visa requirements
- Team members covered by a non-HDHP may not make or receive HSA contributions
- Non-HDHP coverage includes Medicare, Medicaid, Tricare
- Team members may enroll in the Bronze Health Plan, however, should not make or receive contributions
Health Savings Account (HSA) overview:
If you elect the Bronze Health Plan, U-M Health will establish an HSA in your name with our vendor, Wex Inc.
- New account holders: Wex will require team members to verify their identity prior to gaining access to their HSA funds. This is a federal requirement under the U.S. Patriot Act. If accounts are not validated timely, the account will be closed and any contributions will be returned.
Health Savings Accounts may be contributed to by both the employer and the team member. The IRS sets contribution limits for each year. Contribution limits apply to the combined total of what the team member contributes, as well as any employer contribution, and make a contribution based on your enrollment level.
- Contribution limits (2026 listed):
- $4,400 for team member only coverage
- $8,750 for team member plus spouse, child(ren), or family coverage
Contributions are pre-tax, and HSA funds can be used on eligible items at any time. HSA funds do not expire.
- Eligible expenses: Eligible expenses include out-of-pocket expenses related to doctor visits, prescription medications, dental/vision exams and much more!
- Check eligible expenses on our vendor’s (Wex) website!
- H.S.A. card: WEX debit card tied to individual HSA accounts will be issued. Team members can request additional cards from the vendor.
- Employer contribution: U-M Health will make an annual employer contribution at the beginning of the year in January, usually after the first pay period passes. Remember: This amount counts towards the annual contribution limit.

- Investment: HSA balances over $1,000 can be invested through team member’s Wex account.
- Fee: There is a monthly account fee. While actively employed, U-M Health pays this fee for team members.

Team members electing HSA benefit options are responsible for managing compliance with IRS HSA rules.
Note regarding contributions: U-M Health automatically makes a one-time annual employer contribution to your HSA account, pro-rated based on effective date.
