- Union represented team members may have different benefits. Applicable options are listed on new hire documents, the regional benefits website, and will display in the enrollment site during open enrollment. Should any questions arise, contracts in effect will take precedence.
Disability Insurance
Most people underestimate the likelihood of being disabled at some point in their life. Disability insurance replaces part of your pay while you are unable to work so you have a continuing income for living expenses.

- Short-Term Disability (STD)
- Eligible team members will either be provided short-term disability by UM Health-West/UM Health-Sparrow or may be eligible to purchase voluntary plan options based on job classification and FTE status.
- Non-union Full Time team members (excluding those hired by UM Health-Sparrow prior to 1982, and those employed by UM Health-Sparrow Ionia or UM Health-Sparrow Clinton) are provided short term disability
- Some reasons to enroll in STD:
- Pregnancy, childbirth recovery
- Prolonged illness or injury
- Surgery and recover time

- Eligible team members will either be provided short-term disability by UM Health-West/UM Health-Sparrow or may be eligible to purchase voluntary plan options based on job classification and FTE status.
- Voluntary Short-Term Disability (STD)
- The Voluntary STD benefit is available to all active hourly employees who are not provided STD by U-M Health. This includes our Part Time team members with an FTE of .5-.89 @ UM Health-West or .6-.89 FTE @ UM Health-Sparrow.
- You may elect coverage of 60% of your pre-disability base earnings, not to exceed $1,200 weekly (MNA PECSH see below)* .
- Premiums are 100% employee paid on a post-tax basis.
- The benefit begins after the elimination period (which vary by classification/union) and continues for a duration of up to 12 weeks at which time you will either be able to return to work or be eligible for long-term disability.
- West Team Members only: If you are eligible for Short-Term Illness Bank (STIB) or STIB 70, this benefit will begin to pay at the later of 7 days or when STIB runs out. Please refer to HR-71 policy for STIB details

*STD for MNA PECSH Team Members: Voluntary – must be purchased by MNA team members during their new hire eligibility period, within 30 days of a qualified status change or during the Annual Open Enrollment period. MNA PECSH team members who sign up for coverage after their initial enrollment period will no longer be required to complete an Evidence of Insurability (EOI) to gain coverage. Instead, all MNA PECSH team members who elect coverage will gain coverage but will be subject to a pre-existing condition clause. Under this clause, MNA PECSH team members that sign up would not be covered for pre-existing conditions only if they received treatment or took prescriptions drugs for the condition three (3) months prior to the first 12 months of the policy coverage.
- Long-Term Disability (LTD)
- The core long-term disability plan is available to team members based on job title and employment status. This benefit provides income during an extended period of disability if you are disabled and unable to return to work after 90 consecutive days (for non-union hourly team members), or 120 days (for non-union salaried team members). Full Time team members are offered buy-up LTD which increases the benefit to 66.67% of monthly wages. PT team members may purchase core LTD – see Voluntary Long-term Disability below (pays up to 60% of monthly wages.)
- Note: The core LTD plan is available at no cost to you and is based on your job title and employment status.
- Voluntary Long-Term Disability (LTD)

- Basic Life and Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D)

- Basic life insurance pays your beneficiary a lump sum if a team member passes away while actively employed. AD&D (accidental death & dismemberment) coverage provides a benefit to you if you suffer from loss of a limb, speech, sight, or hearing, or to your beneficiary, if you have a fatal accident.
- U-M Health provides Basic Life benefits to all Full Time and Part Time benefit-eligible employees. These benefits are based on your job title and employment status.
- New for 2026! All non-union, IUE and SEIU team members have AD&D coverage equal to their base life insurance benefit!
- Change for 2026: Non-union, IUE, SEIU and MNA-PECSH part-time team members have an increased benefit of $20k!
